President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government is working to secure a permanent source of income for Omadhoo Council from the two uninhabited islands under its jurisdiction.
Addressing Thaa Omadhoo residents during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in four atolls, the President noted that while the current law prevents councils from authorising resort development on such islands, they can still develop guesthouses or city hotels. He said the Administration is exploring legal measures to ensure councils receive a share of the revenue generated, adding that efforts are underway to guarantee long-term benefits for Omadhoo through the two nearby islands.
Turning to local concerns, the President acknowledged delays in the island’s water and sewerage project and said the Government would take over the work if the contractor fails to proceed. He also pledged to complete construction of the school before the upcoming academic year and to provide an ambulance for the health centre within the year.
Further commitments include the development of a new mosque, a volleyball court, and the upgrading of the futsal ground with new turf and lighting to allow for night play. At the same event, the Government signed an agreement with the Road Development Corporation to begin Omadhoo’s road development project.
