The Elections Commission has finalised regulations outlining how four members of the newly created Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission will be elected, introducing a sector-based voting system for broadcasters and other media outlets.
The seven-member commission, established under the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, is set to oversee media and broadcasting in the Maldives. While three members will be appointed by Parliament through a public application process, the remaining four will be chosen directly by registered media organisations in elections supervised by the Elections Commission.
According to the rules, two of the elected members will represent broadcasters and two will represent other media, with voting conducted separately for each group. Every registered media outlet will be entitled to one vote and must officially nominate a representative through the Elections Commission. The commission will first publish a provisional voter list, open a short window for corrections or complaints, and then release the final roll.
Those wishing to contest will be given ten days to apply once the election is announced. The Elections Commission is required to review each application within 48 hours, either confirming candidacy or outlining reasons for rejection. A date for the election has not yet been announced.
