Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has said that the authority of judges lies in prosecuting cases and not in misusing power over others.
He made the remarks at the swearing-in ceremony of Uz Ibrahim Mahir, who was appointed as a High Court judge.
Welcoming Judge Uz Mahir to his new role, the Chief Justice also thanked him for his service at the Civil Court and Family Court.
In his speech, Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee emphasised the importance of ethical standards for judges, urging them to uphold integrity and proper conduct in the workplace. He said the court environment must provide the highest level of service to all who come seeking justice.
“In fact, being a judge or a senior court official is not about exercising authority over others. The legal mandate of judges is to prosecute; beyond that, nothing can be done in the court environment,” he said.
The Chief Justice added that differences of opinion among judges are not a problem if solutions are sought in good faith. He stressed that judges should maintain strong ethical standards and good character, which can only be achieved by adhering to established rules.
