President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Guraidhoo Airport will be inaugurated on Independence Day 2027.

Speaking to residents of Thaa Guraidhoo during his ongoing tour of four atolls, the President said development works for the project will commence on Friday and will be completed within 22 months. He described the new airport as a key gateway for both Guraidhoo and the wider region.

Alongside the airport project, President Dr Muizzu highlighted progress in decentralising public services. He confirmed that national identity card and passport issuance services will be launched in Guraidhoo this November. ID card services were expanded to all atolls on 19 September.

On housing, the President said the Bank of Maldives’ home loan scheme, which allows financing of up to MVR 30 million without collateral, will soon be rolled out nationwide. He also announced that 100 new housing units will be built in Guraidhoo next year, with residents given the option to construct on their own plots.

Additional projects planned for the island include the reclamation of seven hectares of land, which will be undertaken as part of the reclamation of the nearby island of Gaadhiffushi. The President further noted that harbour expansion and development will be budgeted for 2026.

In addition, he assured that the stalled school project in Guraidhoo will be completed before the next academic year, while construction of a modern children’s park is scheduled to begin before the end of this year.
