The National Drug Agency (NDA) has said it is working to expand rehabilitation capacity across the Maldives, as more than 1,200 people are currently undergoing treatment in centres nationwide.

Speaking to State media, Minister of State for Homeland Security and Technology Uza Lubna Mohamed Zahir Hussain said treatment is ongoing in 12 rehabilitation centres, which are operating at full capacity. Patients include both voluntary clients and those sentenced by the drug court.

A new facility is being established in Hulhumalé to treat drug users and patients with mental health conditions. Uza Lubna said this will create additional opportunities for rehabilitation once completed.

According to official figures, the drug court sentenced 597 clients to rehabilitation last year, while 500 have been sentenced so far this year. Since October 2024, nearly 500 people have also been recruited to the remand centre, many requiring mental health and medical care alongside rehabilitation services.

Uza Lubna said the agency ensures that individuals who have not previously received adequate treatment are provided with comprehensive care during the 30-day period they remain at the remand centre.

Rehabilitation services are currently available in Malé, Hulhumalé, Kaafu Himmafushi, Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Hanimadhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Seenu Hithadhoo, Hulhumeedhoo and Gaafu Alifu Villingili.
