President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of development initiatives for Thaa Gaadhiffushi, including land reclamation, harbour upgrades, and expanded health and sports facilities.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Gaadhiffushi residents as part of his ongoing tour of four atolls.
The President said land reclamation will be carried out in Gaadhiffushi to facilitate housing and create new economic opportunities. Once completed, the island council will prepare a land use plan in consultation with the community, which will then be submitted to the relevant ministry for implementation.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the contractor for the reclamation project, said necessary permits will be obtained and preparations completed within 65 days, with the reclamation itself to be finalised within 580 days.
The President also assured residents that harbour development would be carried out in line with their needs. Practical works on upgrading the harbour commenced during his visit, and the project includes changes to the harbour canal. MTCC expects the work to be completed within 540 days.
Practical works on the extension of the island’s health centre also commenced during the President’s visit, with the project being carried out by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).
The President said efforts will be expedited to complete both the health centre extension and a new Fitness and Recreation Centre. A new island council secretariat will also be built under a project funded by the Chinese government.
Further developments announced include turfing and fencing for the island’s football ground, improvements to waste management in partnership with WAMCO, and measures to resolve electricity supply issues before next Ramadan.
Addressing the gathering, President Dr Muizzu said his visit was intended to listen directly to the concerns of Gaadhiffushi residents and bring solutions based on their priorities.
