Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has called for greater collaboration to promote sustainable tourism, stressing the need to balance industry growth with the protection of the environment and cultural heritage. He made the remarks in a video message released to mark World Tourism Day.
The Minister highlighted that the Maldives has earned global recognition as a tourism leader thanks to the dedication of workers across the sector. He noted that tourism remains one of the country’s largest contributors to economic and social development and must continue to be developed responsibly.
Referring to international figures, Minister Thoriq said the global tourism industry was valued at USD 1.6 trillion in 2024, with tourist arrivals worldwide projected to grow by 3–5 per cent this year. He pointed out that the Maldives has mirrored this progress while also taking significant steps to preserve its fragile ecosystem alongside industry expansion.
The Minister further emphasised that sustainable tourism requires protecting both the environment and culture for future generations. He noted that under initiatives introduced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives is pursuing investments in infrastructure, innovation and marketing to ensure the country remains a sustainable and inclusive tourist destination.
