The Maldives has been elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) for the 2025–2028 term. The selection took place during the committee’s 14th plenary meeting held in the Republic of Korea.

Director General of Geomatics at the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mohamed Shafee, will represent the Maldives on the board after being chosen by consensus of all member states. He joins representatives from Armenia, Australia, Fiji, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, and Tonga.

This marks the first time the Maldives has secured a seat on the UN-GGIM-AP Executive Board, which consists of 15 members, including two co-chairs and three vice-chairs. The board plays a central role in shaping the committee’s strategies and overseeing implementation of its work.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives’ membership underscores the country’s growing presence in international cooperation on geospatial management. The UN-GGIM-AP brings together 56 member states in the Asia-Pacific region, tasked with coordinating and advancing the use of geospatial information under global UN frameworks and international standards.
