The Criminal Court has sentenced former Managing Director of Maldive Gas Pvt Ltd, Abdulla Maumoon, to 12 years, nine months, and 18 days in prison after convicting him on two counts of bribery.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Maumoon accepted USD 201,439 in illicit payments from a company contracted to supply liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2016, during his tenure under the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.

Investigators determined that the funds were channelled through businesses linked to Maumoon and into accounts belonging to his family members.

The Prosecutor General’s Office filed seven charges of bribery against Maumoon and several associates in April 2023 following an Anti-Corruption Commission investigation.

Monday’s verdict addresses two of the charges, while judgments on the remaining five are expected at a later date.
