President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Aishath Rameela, as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The announcement was made during the opening sitting of Parliament’s third session this year, after which the matter was forwarded to the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee for review.

Of the candidates who applied for the position, President Dr Muizzu forwarded only Dr Rameela’s name for parliamentary approval. The appointment is to replace HRCM member Mariyam Muna, whose term is set to expire on 30 November 2025.

Dr Rameela, who resigned as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in December last year citing health reasons, has more than three decades of experience in public service. Beginning her career as a nurse in 1990, she has since served in both government and the private sector.

She holds a PhD in Social Science, awarded in 2010 in Malaysia, and has previously served as Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Health and Family.
