President commits to advancing football in the Maldives

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening and advancing football in the Maldives, underscoring its role as the nation’s most cherished sport.
The President made the remarks during an evening tea held at Citron by Lemongrass in honour of the national football team on 2 October. He stressed that football would continue to remain a priority within the broader framework of national sports development and assured that the Government would extend full support to elevate the sports’s growth and success.
Highlighting the popularity of football among Maldivians, including himself, President Dr Muizzu noted that ongoing efforts are underway to expand the sport across islands, supported by infrastructure projects and facility upgrades designed to encourage both sporting excellence and physical fitness nationwide.
President Dr Muizzu also congratulated the national team on their recent victory in the South Asian Super Cup 2025, commending their dedication and urging them to continue bringing pride and honour to the country.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts Ibrahim Waheed, and President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), Ahmed Thoriq.
