President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged the tourism industry stakeholders to develop the industry while safeguarding the natural beauty and culture of the Maldives.

In a message shared on X on the occasion of National Tourism Day, the President extended gratitude to past and present workers in the industry for their invaluable contributions to making tourism the mainstay of the Maldivian economy.

He stressed that while expansion and innovation are vital, it is equally important to ensure that development remains sustainable and deeply respectful of the Maldives’ identity and environment. He urged stakeholders to continue developing the industry while safeguarding the country’s natural beauty, its security, and the rich customs of its people.

Tourism is the largest contributor to the Maldivian economy, accounting for over 25 percent of GDP and employing thousands across the country. The Maldives welcomed a record 1.8 million tourists in 2023 and is aiming to surpass 2 million arrivals this year, with the Government focusing on diversification into new markets and sustainable tourism initiatives.
