The Maldives Police Service has cautioned that legal action will be taken against individuals who share personal information or images of police officers and their family members on social media.
In a statement issued on Monday night, the Police said the warning follows a protest organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on 3 October, during which some participants confronted law enforcement officers. The statement noted that photos and personal details of officers on duty during the protest have since been circulated online.
According to the Police, such actions pose a threat to the safety and wellbeing of officers and their families, and contribute to inciting hatred against those performing their official duties. The Police Service warned that it would take legal measures against anyone who uses social media to intimidate, threaten, or create hostility towards law enforcement personnel.
The statement further added that strict action would also be taken against any unauthorised attempt to obstruct police officers in the execution of their duties. The Police reaffirmed that any effort to disrupt the enforcement of law and order will be dealt with firmly.
The Maldives Police Service urged the public to act responsibly on social media and to refrain from behaviour that could compromise the safety, integrity, or reputation of officers fulfilling their lawful obligations.
