Dialysis services have officially commenced at Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hospital, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurating the new facility during his visit to Mahibadhoo on 7 October 2025.
The President toured the dialysis unit, inspected the facilities, and met with hospital staff as part of the opening ceremony.
Kidney disease is among the most common non-communicable diseases in the Maldives, with many patients requiring dialysis several times a week. To address the growing demand, the Government has expanded dialysis care nationwide, establishing 19 units across nine atolls in addition to the original two centres. The services are yet to begin in Vaavu, Faafu, and Dhaalu Atolls.
The new unit in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hospital is expected to reduce travel burdens for patients, improving access to vital treatment within the atoll and strengthening the country’s overall healthcare network.
