President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the land reclamation project to develop the Maafaru Falhu Urban Centre in Alifu Alifu Atoll will be completed within 10 months.

He made the announcement while addressing the people of Mahibadhoo at a meeting held at the Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Education Centre. The President reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to delivering key pledges made during the presidential campaign, particularly the development of Maafaru Falhu as a major urban hub.

The President noted that the project has officially commenced with the construction of a boundary wall – the first stage of reclamation works. He assured that the development will proceed without interruption and that 67 hectares of land will be reclaimed and handed over to the community upon completion. The project has been designated a high priority by the government and is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming Mahibadhoo into a regional centre for sustainable development.

The President also announced that the construction of 150 housing units in Mahibadhoo has been included in the 2026 State budget, with work scheduled to begin early next year. In addition, he highlighted the recent commencement of dialysis services at the Atoll Hospital as a significant advancement in local healthcare.

Further enhancing healthcare capacity, the President confirmed plans to develop a 50-bed hospital in Mahibadhoo early next year, noting that the necessary funds have already been allocated. He said the new facility would bring major improvements to health services across the atoll.

President Dr Muizzu also shared updates on infrastructure development, stating that the second phase of Mahibadhoo’s road construction project will move forward swiftly. He underscored the Government’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns, adding that the introduction of WAMCO services will support waste management and sustainability initiatives on the island.
