President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will present 27 bills to the upcoming session of the People’s Majlis, including a constitutional amendment to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.

Speaking in Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, the President outlined a legislative agenda focused on national development, governance reform, and enhanced transparency. He said the proposed amendment to synchronise the two elections would be pursued through a public referendum.

A total of 27 bills are to be tabled during the ongoing parliamentary session, including 12 new laws. The forthcoming set of bills is expected to build on this progress, with a strong emphasis on addressing corruption and strengthening the rule of law.

Five of the proposed bills will focus on anti-corruption measures. These include amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act, the Asset Recovery Bill, the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, and the Penal Code.

The reforms aim to eliminate existing legal gaps that hinder the fight against corruption and to improve coordination among key institutions, including the judiciary, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Maldives Police Service, and the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Through these measures, the Administration seeks to reinforce institutional accountability and ensure that legislative frameworks evolve in line with the country’s development goals.
