The Maldives has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the most people snorkelling simultaneously, with 623 participants taking part in the Baani Event on 18 October 2025 in Baa Atoll. The event highlighted the nation’s deep connection with the ocean and its ongoing commitment to sustainable marine tourism.
Organised by the Baa Atoll Council in partnership with the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the record-breaking gathering brought together participants from 13 islands and 15 resorts, along with representatives from across the country. Resort staff, international tourists, and local communities joined in a unified effort to celebrate environmental awareness and collective responsibility for marine conservation.
Held at Villingilifaru Finolhu, located just ten minutes from Eydhafushi, the event took place in a setting of exceptional natural beauty. The island’s western lagoon and coral-filled outer reef – home to diverse marine life and hundreds of Black-naped Terns – provided a fitting backdrop for this milestone achievement.
The official attempt began at 16:30 hrs and lasted an hour, as hundreds of snorkellers entered the crystal-clear waters from multiple designated points around the sandbank. Following the successful completion of the event, a Guinness World Records adjudicator presented the official plaque to the Baa Atoll Council during a ceremony featuring music, entertainment, and a fireworks display.
The record was also added to the Visit Maldives Book of Records. A commemorative plaque and coin were presented by the Visit Maldives Corporation to the Baa Atoll Council in recognition of the achievement.
The Baani Event stands as a symbol of unity and shared purpose, reflecting the Maldives’ leadership in sustainable marine tourism. It demonstrated how tourism, community engagement, and ocean conservation can thrive together, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to protecting its marine heritage while celebrating its status as one of the world’s leading island destinations.
