The Maldives and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Political Consultations to further strengthen their longstanding relationship and enhance cooperation on key bilateral and international matters.

The MoU, signed between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, establishes a formal framework for regular consultations and structured dialogue between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Dr Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty, during a ceremony held at Tahrir Palace in Cairo.

Following the signing, Minister Khaleel highlighted the historic ties between the Maldives and Egypt, rooted in shared cultural and religious values, and expressed confidence that the formalisation of the MoU would further enhance cooperation and people-to-people connections.

He noted that two rounds of political consultations have already been held, in Cairo in 2019 and Malé in 2023, demonstrating the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening diplomatic engagement.

The Government of the Maldives reiterated its commitment to deepening collaboration with Egypt and exploring new areas of partnership.

Foreign Minister Dr Khaleel was accompanied by Secretary Dr Hala Hameed and Additional Secretary Ms Khadeeja Najeeha from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
