President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to deliver a lasting solution to the persistent flooding problem in Kunahandhoo Island, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to addressing key infrastructure challenges faced by island communities.

During a meeting with residents as part of his ongoing visit to the inhabited islands of Laamu Atoll, President Dr Muizzu acknowledged the hardships caused by repeated flooding and assured that the Administration is working towards a permanent fix.

Residents raised several concerns during the meeting, including the need to restart the stalled water and sewerage project, expedite the newly signed beach protection initiative, and improve essential public facilities. Other concerns included the limited space at the council office, the absence of a community hall, and the lack of adequate healthcare services on the island.

The President confirmed that seven development projects had been signed for Kunahandhoo, emphasising the Government’s commitment to ensuring their timely completion. He noted that the beach protection project would include an overnight recreational area and announced that the school construction project had been reassigned to Fenaka Corporation, with completion expected before the next academic year.

President Dr Muizzu's visit to Kunahandhoo is the first by a sitting president since 1978 to meet the residents outside of a campaign.
