Members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) abstained from voting on a parliamentary resolution claiming that the Maldives is facing a shortage of blood. The resolution was submitted by North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim.
In presenting the motion, MP Mohamed Ibrahim said that individuals with thalassaemia and those requiring blood transfusions during medical emergencies continue to face severe challenges in obtaining blood. He accused the Government of failing to adequately address the issue.
Following the debate, the Parliament moved to a vote on the resolution before the end of the sitting. Most opposition MDP members were absent from the chamber at the time, including MP Mohamed Ibrahim himself, who did not participate in the vote.
During the debate, members of the People’s National Congress (PNC) highlighted the difficulties faced by thalassaemia patients over the past five years and commended President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for the positive steps taken under his Administration to improve blood services.
Several members also criticised the previous Government for failing to strengthen the Maldivian Blood Service and address long-standing issues at the Thalassaemia Centre during its five-year term.
