President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the ongoing land reclamation project in Kaafu Dhiffushi will double the size of the island and be completed within one year.
Speaking to residents of Dhiffushi during his visit on Tuesday, the President said that one of the island’s most pressing challenges is overcrowding due to limited land area. He noted that the reclamation project, which will add 23 hectares to the island’s existing 27 hectares, will address this long-standing concern. The President emphasised that the project is not only vital for housing but also for expanding local tourism and enabling future infrastructure development.
The President also highlighted several other development initiatives planned for Dhiffushi, including the expansion of the island’s school with additional classrooms and a multipurpose hall. He said the new Fitness and Recreation Centre will serve as an important facility for both youth and the wider community.
In addition, the President announced that practical work on the mosque development and police station projects will begin this year following the signing of agreements. He further stated that next year’s plans include the construction of a volleyball court, a handball court, road development works, and initiatives to strengthen local tourism.
President Dr Muizzu also revealed that the upcoming State budget includes provisions to upgrade the island’s health centre to a 24-hour facility. The upgrade will include additional staff and improved diagnostic services such as X-ray facilities.
He added that a Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) will be installed near Dhiffushi this year to support sports fishing activities.
Highlighting Dhiffushi’s growing prominence in local tourism, the President said dollar ATMs are being introduced across 40 islands over the next five months, including tourism-focused islands, cities, and urban centres. He confirmed that Dhiffushi will be among the islands to receive a dollar ATM before March next year.
