President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that the Maldives’ future can only be secured by placing the progress and well-being of its people at the centre of all national efforts.

In a message shared on social media to commemorate this year’s Victory Day, the President paid tribute to the brave sacrifices made on 3 November 1988. He stated that the courage and patriotism displayed on that day stand alongside the heroism of historical figures such as Ali Rasgefaanu, Boduthakurufaanu, and Dhonbandaarain. He noted that those who prioritised the country’s sovereignty and independence exemplified the enduring spirit of the Maldivian people, who will always respond to the nation’s call with their hearts and souls.

President Dr Muizzu also offered prayers for the continued growth of patriotic values within the country and expressed his wish for lasting unity and harmony among the Maldivian people.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also shared a message on the occasion, describing Victory Day as a powerful reminder of the courage and loyalty of Maldivians towards their nation and religion. She said that the sacrifices of those who shed their blood for the country will forever remain a part of Maldivian soil and spirit. The First Lady further expressed hope that the people of the Maldives will remain united, honest, and steadfast in all matters of national importance. Her message concluded with a prayer for continued good fortune, prosperity, and stability for the nation.

Victory Day is commemorated annually in the Maldives to honour the nation’s triumph over the treacherous terrorist attack of 3 November 1988. The attack, which claimed the lives of 19 Maldivians – including eight soldiers and 11 civilians – was repelled through the unity, bravery, and resilience of the Maldivian armed forces and citizens. The day stands as a lasting symbol of national solidarity and sacrifice.
