Minister Ihusaan affirms human rights commitment in national security efforts

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has affirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding human rights while enhancing national security and curbing crime.

Minister Ihusaan made the remarks while addressing the Fourth Round of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on the human rights situation in the Maldives. 

He said that as part of the Government’s vision to make the Maldives a developed country by 2040, the ministry’s mandate has been broadened to strengthen law enforcement while safeguarding citizens’ rights and institutional integrity.

Minister Ihusaan outlined key developments during the past four years, including amendments to the Police Act, which have expanded services to all inhabited islands. He noted that police officers are now trained with a focus on human rights protection.

The minister also highlighted the Government’s ongoing efforts to address prison reform, ensure prisoners’ rights, and improve human resource capacity within enforcement agencies. He said amendments made to the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act in 2021 are now being implemented under the ministry.

Minister Ihusaan further detailed the measures taken to improve conditions for foreign workers and to strengthen the juvenile justice system. He noted that reforms are being made to help reintegrate children in conflict with the law into society.

He also discussed initiatives to combat drug smuggling and abuse, stating that the Government is reinforcing treatment and prevention mechanisms in line with international standards.

Addressing counterterrorism efforts, Minister Ihusaan stated that the government continues to act in compliance with international law. He also mentioned that under the Maldives 2.0 policy, the ministry is working to digitise public services and enhance administrative efficiency.
