The first batch of commercially cultivated seaweed in the Maldives is ready for export.
The project, launched on 20 April this year in Baa Fehendhoo, is being implemented by Floating Acres Pvt Ltd. The initiative represents the first large-scale seaweed cultivation effort in the Maldives, aimed at promoting sustainable use of marine resources and diversifying the economy.
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam congratulated Floating Acres on the success of the project and commended their commitment to sustainable practices. He described the achievement as a reflection of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to diversify the economy and promote the blue economy initiative.
Facilitating the sustainable use of marine resources and promoting sectors such as mariculture remain key priorities of the Administration. The Ministry is also working to strengthen policy frameworks to attract private investment and ensure greater economic returns from marine-based industries.
