Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has stated that efforts to deepen cooperation with key international partners, particularly India and China, have helped the Maldives overcome significant fiscal challenges during the past two years,

In an interview with MMTV, the Minister highlighted the Administration’s extensive diplomatic engagements, noting that the Government has worked to strengthen ties with a wide range of countries to secure tangible benefits for the Maldivian people. He said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s “Maldives first” foreign policy principle guides all international relations.

Minister Dr Khaleel said substantial progress has been made through the Government’s work with both China and neighbouring India. He noted that support from these two partners has played a key role in easing the Maldives’ heavy debt burden and stabilising the country’s financial position. He said the Maldives now has improved prospects for overcoming debt-related pressures.

In addition, the Minister said several major development projects carried out with China have already been completed, while others are moving forward at an advanced stage. He added that discussions continue on additional areas of cooperation.

He also highlighted that India’s Line of Credit has opened opportunities for investment in sectors such as housing, sports and other areas of the economy, supporting national development efforts.

Speaking earlier at the Administration’s second anniversary event, “Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104,” President Dr Muizzu said the Government’s foreign policy focuses on maintaining international partnerships in ways that directly benefit the Maldives and its people. Based on this approach, the Government has strengthened foreign relations with many countries and worked to secure the greatest possible advantages for the nation.
