A large-scale operation targeting drug traffickers has been launched across the Maldives at the direction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, as part of the Government’s pledge to create a drug-free nation.
The President announced the initiative on social media X, stating that more than 500 police officers are participating in the coordinated crackdown, which will cover over 100 locations nationwide.
The operation, named Operation Alimagu, began at 5:30 a.m. and is one of the most extensive anti-narcotics campaigns conducted in recent years. It involves specialised police units and regional teams working to dismantle trafficking networks and apprehend those responsible for distributing drugs within communities.
Police have stated that Operation Alimagu will continue over the coming days, with priority given to tracking, arresting, and prosecuting key figures in the drug trade.
The nationwide operation follows the Government’s strategy to strengthen law enforcement and rehabilitation frameworks addressing narcotics. In line with this effort, the Administration has proposed amendments to the Narcotics Act to introduce stricter penalties, including the death penalty for major drug traffickers, a bill currently under review in Parliament. Parallel initiatives are also underway to expand rehabilitation and treatment programmes for users, reflecting a dual focus on prevention and recovery alongside enforcement.
