President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that his Administration is fully committed to eradicating drugs from the Maldives.
Speaking at the People’s National Congress (PNC) mega rally tonight, the President outlined four major issues his Administration is prioritising: drugs, gang crime, undocumented expatriate workers and corruption.
On the subject of drugs, President Dr Muizzu highlighted Thursday’s nationwide Operation Alimagu, describing it as the largest anti-narcotics operation ever conducted in the country. He said 500 police officers participated in the operation, during which more than 100 individuals involved in drug trafficking were detained. He noted that the operation is being carried out sincerely and without undue influence, and will continue until drugs are eliminated from the Maldives. The President also reiterated his Administration’s plan to introduce capital punishment for drug trafficking. He said public support is crucial for rehabilitation efforts and for protecting the youth, stressing that eradicating drugs is essential for empowering the younger generation.
Addressing gang-related crime, President Dr Muizzu referenced the Prevention of Gang and Other Serious Offences Act, which came into effect in August 2025. He said gang crimes have decreased by 49 per cent compared to the previous administration, reiterating that his Administration stands firmly with the youth.
Speaking on undocumented expatriate workers, the President said the issue had worsened due to inaction by previous governments, noting that no accurate data existed when he assumed office. Under Operation Kurangi, biometric data of 191,723 workers was collected. He said workers who remain unregistered by tomorrow will face deportation as part of the next phase of the operation. A total of 9,021 undocumented workers have been deported over the past two years, which he said is 143 per cent higher than during the previous administration.
The President also addressed corruption, stating that the Government takes action without regard for a person’s position, whether a politician or a businessman. He added that efforts to digitalise Government services under the Maldives 2.0 initiative will strengthen transparency and reduce opportunities for corruption.
