President reaffirms commitment to supporting nurses and healthcare workforce

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening support for nurses and improving conditions within the healthcare sector, describing nurses as a cornerstone of sustainable healthcare systems.
In a message shared to mark International Nurses Day, the President highlighted the critical role played by nurses in patient care, recovery, disease prevention and community wellbeing. He stated that the contribution of nurses has become increasingly important as healthcare systems continue to face evolving global challenges.
President Dr Muizzu said the Administration remains focused on addressing challenges faced by nurses while prioritising their professional and personal wellbeing. He noted that efforts are ongoing to improve working conditions and benefits, strengthen healthcare policies and expand opportunities for training and professional development.
The President also expressed appreciation to nurses across the Maldives for their service and contribution to national healthcare. He described the nursing profession as essential to building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for the future.
Statistics released by the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare on the occasion of International Nurses Day showed that 64 per cent of nurses currently working in the Maldives are Maldivian nationals. According to the ministry, a total of 3,907 nurses are employed across healthcare facilities nationwide, including 3,593 women and 314 men.
