Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has said the Government will not need to submit a supplementary budget this year, noting that expenditure is expected to remain within the approved limits.
He made the remarks while participating in the ongoing parliamentary debate on the 2026 State Budget.
The Minister said next year will be the most challenging debt-repayment year in Maldivian history and that the proposed budget has been formulated with these realities in mind. He added that economists at both the Ministry of Finance and the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) expect the 2026 budget to be sustainable.
Minister Zameer said the Government is working on several measures to increase revenue without raising taxes. He noted that new avenues such as an international financial centre, emerging digital investment tools, and innovative mechanisms like blockchain and tokenisation could expand the Maldivian economy if utilised effectively.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to make regional airports profitable, stating that improving airport operations is an important part of increasing State revenue.
Speaking on past fiscal practices, the Minister noted that previous administrations routinely submitted supplementary budgets every year. However, he said this Government has managed fiscal policy without requiring a supplementary budget this year and added that no supplementary budget will be needed next year as well.
Minister Zameer further stated that the previous administration had not established a sustainable system for debt repayment, leading to public concern. He assured that the current Government will continue to manage and repay debt in a sustainable and responsible manner.
