From January next year, Aasandha will begin covering all expenses related to mental health treatments, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Monday.
Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the Administration’s second anniversary, celebrated under the theme “Rayyithunnaa Eku Kuriah – Hafthaa 104”, President Dr Muizzu noted that mental health remains a significant public health concern, with patients currently required to bear treatment costs out of pocket.
The President confirmed that, starting January, all treatment expenses for mental health conditions will be fully covered by the State through Aasandha.
The Administration has taken several steps to strengthen the mental health support system since assuming office. On 21 February 2024, the Government launched a dedicated helpline for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. In October, a national suicide prevention strategy was also formulated and implemented as part of efforts to reduce deaths linked to mental illness.
