President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated the search for four missing divers following the diving tragedy in Vaavu Atoll remains the Government’s highest priority.

In a message shared on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu extended condolences to Italian President Sergio Mattarella and the people of Italy following the incident, which claimed the lives of five divers.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased Italians, the missing four Italians and everyone affected,” the President said.

President Dr Muizzu said the Maldives Government appreciates the support provided by the Italian government towards the ongoing recovery operation.

Authorities received reports at around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday that five divers who had gone diving in Vaavu Atoll were missing.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) later said one diver was found dead inside a cave located around 60 metres underwater. Authorities believe the remaining four missing divers may also be inside the cave.

Search and recovery efforts are continuing.
