The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has inaugurated two new courtrooms at Asseyri Prison to facilitate remote trial participation for detainees and inmates.
The courtrooms were officially opened by Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer at a ceremony attended by Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Uz Ibrahim Mohammed Deedi, Asseyri Prison Director Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ismail Naseer, senior MCS officers, and guests.
According to MCS, the new virtual courtrooms will expand access for prisoners and detainees required to appear before courts in Malé and other atolls, allowing them to attend hearings online without the need for travel. The facilities will also be used for conducting family and legal counsel meetings.
In addition to the courtrooms, Commissioner Zareer also inaugurated three newly constructed barracks for prison officers stationed at Asseyri. He expressed appreciation to the officers, staff, and inmates who contributed to the construction work.
MCS stated that the new barracks aim to address longstanding accommodation challenges faced by officers working at the facility.
