The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has re-opened bids for the development and operation of tourist resorts under the halal tourism model.

The deadline for submitting bids is 3 February 2026 at 9:00 a.m.

The areas currently open for halal tourism development include Haa Alifu Beenaafushi, Haa Alifu Kan’daalifinolhu, a lagoon plot from Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo Faru, Shaviyani Fushifaru, and Laamu Fonagaadhoo.

According to the Ministry, all halal tourism projects must strictly comply with Islamic guidelines. Transactions involving alcohol and pork are prohibited, and only halal-certified food and beverages may be served. Halal certification will be mandatory for all relevant services. Each island must also include Islamic facilities, including two separate mosques for guests and staff, designed as distinctive architectural elements.

In addition to reopening applications for halal tourism development, the Ministry has also opened bids for 13 lagoons in the northern atolls.
