Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has underscored the Maldives’ acute vulnerability to climate change and reiterated the country’s ambitious climate commitments during the 4th EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum.

The session, themed “Common Endeavours for a Clean and Sustainable Future,” took place on the sidelines of the ministerial forum, where senior officials and foreign ministers from across the region gathered to discuss collaborative approaches to climate action, sustainability, and environmental resilience.

In his address, Minister Dr Khaleel highlighted the Maldives’ targets outlined under its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1.52 million tonnes by 2035, generating 33 per cent of national electricity from renewable sources by 2028, and embedding climate resilience into all aspects of sustainable development planning. He noted that these objectives reflect the Maldives’ determination to transition towards a low-carbon, climate-resilient future despite significant financial and resource constraints.

Emphasising the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Minister stressed that international support for climate adaptation and mitigation is not only a matter of equity but a strategic investment in global resilience. He said that meaningful and sustained international partnership remains essential to ensure countries like the Maldives can implement long-term climate strategies and protect vulnerable communities.

Minister Dr Khaleel also commended the European Union’s climate policy efforts, including the European Green Deal and the “Fit for 55” package, noting that such initiatives play a key role in fostering international cooperation and advancing shared climate objectives. He added that strengthened collaboration between the EU and Indo-Pacific nations would be crucial in achieving collective progress toward a sustainable and secure future.

The 4th EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum brought together leaders and policymakers to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation on climate action, maritime security, digital transition, and sustainable development.
