The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has begun demolition works at the old Arabiyya School site in Malé City.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu outlined the Government’s plan to clear the site and redevelop it into raised-level vehicle parking and a community park during a meeting with residents of Mahchangolhi on Tuesday. He said the redevelopment will proceed following public consultation to ensure community input is reflected in the final design.

Speaking to State media, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar said the demolition is expected to be completed within half a month. Once the work is finished, the site will be handed over to the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure for the next phase of development.

Minister Adam Shareef noted that safety is a key priority given the high number of residents and schoolchildren in the surrounding area. He added that upcoming school examinations have also been taken into consideration to minimise disruption.

The Minister said the project reflects President Dr Muizzu’s policy to ease congestion in Malé and improve quality of life.
