The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to resume development of the water theme park within the next year.

Speaking before the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, HDC's Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed shared that a Sri Lankan team is currently designing the park and the overall development plan for the area. He added that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is already underway, and the surrounding sand area will be expanded and further developed once the initial work is completed.

Fazul also highlighted that the water theme park will be developed alongside a children’s playground, with an adventure park to be added as soon as possible.

Originally scheduled to be completed in 2017 at an estimated cost of MVR 385.5 million, the water theme park project has seen limited progress, with only some structural work on the park’s buildings being carried out. The contract was initially awarded to the Waterfront Hotel and Leisure Company. However, as little progress was made, HDC decided to terminate the agreement with the company.

When the project was initially launched, HDC stated that the water theme park would be built alongside a 50-room hotel. Planned features included spiral slides, speed slides, family slides, a children’s pool, bumper boats, and water houses. In addition, the park was set to include water rollers, aqua loops, and a fountain square.
