Maldivian Ambassador to Japan Ahmed Mahloof has said that the outcome of the recent elections does not justify calls for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to resign, stating that the results cannot be considered a loss for the Government.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Mahloof responded to opposition claims that the Government had been defeated, noting that the Administration’s performance should be viewed in a broader context rather than as a standalone result.

He said that previous administrations, including those led by the opposition, had also failed to secure clear majorities in local council elections, adding that such outcomes had not led to resignations. Mahloof further argued that interpreting the referendum vote as a direct measure of the Government’s popularity was misleading.

Mahloof said the purpose of the referendum was not to benefit the President or the ruling party, but to introduce changes in line with public interest. He emphasised that linking the overall vote outcome solely to the Government’s performance does not accurately reflect the intent behind the process.

He also noted that the ruling party secured a majority in 16 atolls in the latest results, including areas previously won by the opposition, reinforcing his view that the election outcome does not warrant a resignation.
