Sri Lanka is set to receive USD 6.59 million in international assistance following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwa, with the Maldives emerging as the single largest contributor.

According to Ceylon Today, the Maldives provided a total of USD 2.4 million in aid, surpassing all other donor countries. This contribution includes support from the Government, state institutions, private companies, and the Maldivian public.

This marks the largest humanitarian assistance package ever extended by the Maldives to a neighbouring country, reflecting how Maldivians consistently come together in times of need. It underscores the nation’s deep-rooted tradition of compassion, unity, and readiness to support those facing crisis, both at home and across the region.

While Sri Lanka estimates that it will require USD 6.7 billion for full recovery and reconstruction, the Maldives’ swift and substantial response has been widely recognised as a strong reflection of the Government’s foreign policy approach, prioritising close ties, compassion, and meaningful cooperation with neighbouring nations.
