Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that the Government is giving special priority to listening to the voices of fishermen and working closely with industry stakeholders to resolve long-standing challenges in the fisheries sector.

The Minister made the remarks at the inauguration of Masveringe Gunzaru, held in Raa Dhuvaafaru to mark National Fishermen’s Day. He noted that several consultations and meetings have already been conducted across the country to gather input directly from fishermen, ensuring that their concerns guide the Government’s policy decisions.

Minister Shiyam also congratulated fishermen on the occasion and reaffirmed that addressing sector-wide issues remains a central commitment of the Administration. He said the Government inherited an industry facing numerous difficulties, which led President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to make several promises aimed at restoring stability and supporting fishermen’s livelihoods.

“The President has made a lot of promises to the industry because of the situation it was in. He is working to fulfil each one of them. Some promises require time as they involve financial arrangements, but the work is underway and steps are being taken to deliver on all commitments,” the Minister said.

He added that suggestions raised during stakeholder meetings are considered for implementation whenever they align with Government policy.

This year’s Masveringe Gunzaru features participation from 40 fishermen representing nine atolls, along with four fish processing companies. The forum provides fishermen with the opportunity to present their concerns directly to officials, while the Ministry will share updates on ongoing efforts to develop the fisheries sector.
