A noticeable haze has settled over Malé and several other parts of the Maldives, with air quality monitors showing levels that pose risks to sensitive groups.

Data from IQAir shows that Malé currently records an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 104, placing the city in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) stands at 36.6 micrograms per cubic metre, which is 6.6 times higher than the safety level recommended by the World Health Organization.

PM2.5 consists of microscopic particles that can enter the lungs and bloodstream. Exposure at the present levels can trigger breathing difficulties among individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Children may also experience coughing and discomfort due to their increased vulnerability to fine dust.

IQAir’s forecast indicates that the haze may ease slightly over the next two to three days. However, air quality is expected to deteriorate further by next Tuesday. The thick haze has already reduced visibility across the Malé region.

This decline in air quality occurs annually during the transition from the Southwest Monsoon to the Northeast Monsoon, a period known for reduced atmospheric clarity in the Maldives.
