Maafaru International Airport has marked a new milestone in its development with the inauguration of its apron extension and the groundbreaking of an expansion to the airport’s terminal building.
The newly completed apron extension represents a significant enhancement to the airport’s operational capacity, supporting increased aircraft movements and improving ground handling efficiency. In addition, construction has commenced on the terminal building extension, which upon completion is expected to substantially improve passenger handling capacity and facilities, enabling smoother arrival and departure flows.
The apron extension project was financed by Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) serving as the contractor. The expanded apron strengthens Maafaru International Airport’s ability to accommodate rising private aviation activity alongside scheduled commercial operations, positioning the airport for its next phase of growth.
Maafaru International Airport was upgraded and reopened in July 2025 with enhanced facilities, further strengthening its role in the country’s aviation network.
The airport has become an increasingly important hub for private aviation in the Maldives. In 2024, it recorded 98 private jet movements, making it the second-busiest airport for private jets after Velana International Airport (VIA). Maafaru International Airport also serves as a key gateway for tourists travelling to several high-end resorts, including Velaa Private Island, Soneva Jani, and Cheval Blanc Randheli.
