The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced that Israhvehinge Naadhee, community centres for senior citizens, will be established in four atolls within the next six months as part of efforts to expand elderly care services nationwide.
The announcement follows the Government’s commitment to strengthen the protection of senior citizens and enhance their role in society through the establishment of dedicated spaces for social interaction and wellbeing.
Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham said the centres are aimed at addressing loneliness among senior citizens by providing safe and welcoming environments where they can meet, participate in activities, and remain socially engaged. She noted that the Israhvehinge Naadhee centres already operating in Malé and Hulhumalé have hosted a range of activities, including social programmes and competitions tailored for older persons.
The Minister said the Ministry is working closely with local councils to expand the initiative beyond the Greater Malé Region, adding that interest has been expressed by 74 councils nationwide to develop similar centres in their communities. She said discussions are ongoing to establish additional facilities in collaboration with councils over the coming months.
According to the Ministry, Israhvehinge Naadhee centres will be developed in selected islands across Lhaviyani, Dhaalu, Raa and Shaviyani atolls as part of the next phase of implementation. The centres in the atolls will be managed by island councils, with the Ministry providing the necessary support to facilitate programmes and services.
