President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Dr Aishath Rameela as President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The appointment was approved by Parliament on 6 January 2026, with 38 members voting in favour.
Dr Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 3 December 2025, replacing outgoing member Mariyam Muna following the expiry of her term.
A former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Rameela resigned from the post in December 2024 citing health reasons. She has more than three decades of experience in public service, having begun her career as a nurse in 1990 before serving in a range of roles across the Government and the private sector.
She holds a PhD in Social Science, awarded in Malaysia in 2010, and has previously served as Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Health and Family.
