Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said that a 48-metre stretch of sheet piling has been completed under Phase 2 of the Malé Northside Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project.
Construction on the project began on December 9, with works on the second segment currently progressing steadily, the company said.
According to MTCC, sewer and water pipeline installation has reached 50 per cent completion, while reclamation works are ongoing to raise the retaining wall to six metres. Pedestrian lane paving has also commenced alongside the sheet piling works.
As part of the project, a 250-metre stretch of asphalt road is being developed from the local market area to North Harbour, with the road widened to six metres. In total, 1,088 metres of road will be upgraded from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to North Harbour.
The first phase of the project, covering 140 metres, has already been completed. The second phase is targeted for completion before Ramadan, after which the road is expected to be opened to the public.
Once completed, the project is expected to modernise roads in the market area, improve pedestrian safety, address flooding issues, and reduce congestion in the commercial harbour area, easing the transportation of goods within Malé City.
