The MP for Dhidhdhoo constituency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed, has said that the ongoing land reclamation project for the development of an airport in Dhidhdhoo will transform the island.
Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, the MP noted that reclamation works began on 5 January and are progressing rapidly. He highlighted that the project will reclaim an area larger than the current size of Dhidhdhoo, reshaping the island’s future.
Latheef stressed that the initiative reflects the strong policies of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, adding that it demonstrates the President’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to the people. He also pointed out that previous administrations had neglected Dhidhdhoo’s development, describing the project as the single largest investment made on one island by the current government.
According to project details, 115 hectares of land will be added to Dhidhdhoo. The Government has awarded the contract to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Land reclamation began earlier this month, with 21 hectares completed so far, representing 18.75 per cent of the total work.
President Dr Muizzu has pledged to reclaim land and build an airport in Dhidhdhoo, a commitment he made during the 2023 presidential election campaign.
