Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has commenced the purchase of yellowfin tuna weighing over 10 kilograms, expanding its procurement operations to address challenges faced by fishermen and strengthen the fisheries sector.
According to MIFCO, all necessary preparations have been completed and the purchase of yellowfin tuna has officially begun from Kandu Oiy Giri MIFCO facility, with procurement now underway at several MIFCO centres and vessels. The company has started buying tuna weighing between 10 and 15 kilograms at a price of MVR 20 per kilogram.
Purchases of tuna exceeding 15 kilograms, which MIFCO has been conducting since 11 January, continue at a rate of MVR 25 per kilogram. The company stated that payments to fishermen are being processed within 48 hours of purchase.
MIFCO confirmed that yellowfin tuna of this size has been purchased for its vessels from locations including Kooddoo Port, Addu Port, Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo and Thinadhoo. The initiative is intended to improve market access for fishermen who previously faced difficulties selling larger tuna due to payment delays and limited purchasing capacity.
The company noted that the move is part of the Government’s efforts to develop the fisheries sector in collaboration with MIFCO. The initiative is expected to help resolve long-standing concerns among yellowfin tuna fishermen and contribute to increased activity within the sector.
