The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has held discussions on enabling local content creators to generate revenue through TikTok, during a meeting with senior representatives of the social media platform on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
The meeting took place between Minister Saeed and Emir Gelen, Head of Government Relations and Public Policy for TikTok’s Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Pakistan and South Asia (METAPSA) region. Discussions focused on potential monetisation pathways for Maldivian creators and how such mechanisms could be introduced in line with the government’s digital economy objectives.
According to the Ministry, the engagement is part of efforts to ensure that Maldivian youth and creative professionals are able to benefit economically from global digital platforms. The ministry noted that the discussions align with policy commitments outlined in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto, particularly those related to expanding digital opportunities and income generation.
The ministry stated that the meeting in Davos builds on ongoing engagement with TikTok, including a recent visit to the Maldives by a TikTok delegation, during which preliminary discussions were held with Government officials on collaboration and platform-related initiatives.
Minister Saeed said that partnerships with international digital platforms could open access for Maldivian creators to global markets, while also contributing to broader economic growth. He added that discussions are continuing with TikTok’s regional offices to determine how the platform’s monetisation features could be adapted to best serve the Maldivian context.
