Deputy Mayor of Malé City Council, Mohamed Areesh, has stated that Mayor Adam Azim has been crediting himself for work carried out by PNC.

Areesh made the remarks while speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, stating that the PNC-majority council has been carrying out practical work consistently to benefit the public, but that credit for completed projects is being claimed by the Mayor, who represents the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Citing the redevelopment of Galolhu City Park as an example, Areesh said the project was initiated and implemented through the efforts of PNC councillors elected during the council’s fourth term, in collaboration with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He said the Mayor had been repeatedly informed that all councillors wished to attend the opening ceremony, but alleged that no PNC councillors were invited.

Areesh also expressed concern that the park was opened without informing PNC members, despite the project being developed through the collective efforts of councillors, including opposition members. He said it was regrettable that councillors who worked on the project were not given due recognition.

According to Areesh, the decision to redevelop Galolhu City Park was taken after it was identified as an underutilised space. Two consultation meetings, initiated by the President, were held with residents of Galolhu, with the park’s design finalised based on public input.

The newly redeveloped Galolhu City Park includes a three-on-three basketball court, exercise areas for all age groups, seating and relaxation spaces, a children’s play area, and facilities for hosting community events. The project was completed at a cost of MVR 2.5 million from the city council’s budget.
