President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Maldives men's national futsal team on securing the championship at the SAFF Futsal Championship 2026, describing the achievement as a historic honour for the country.
In a message shared on social media following the victory, the President praised the national team for winning the tournament with a flawless record, noting that triumphing in an international competition with victories in every match reflects strong national spirit, discipline and determination. He expressed appreciation to the players for their performance and commitment throughout the tournament.
President Dr Muizzu noted that the growing number of Maldivian athletes achieving top honours in international sports is a positive sign for the country’s future.
The Maldives clinched the championship after defeating Bhutan 3–1 in their fifth match of the competition, held at the Nonthaburi Stadium in Thailand. With the win, the Maldives secured 15 points from five matches, maintaining an unbeaten run and confirming the title with one match remaining. No other team in the tournament can surpass the Maldives in points, even with fixtures still to be played.
The SAFF Futsal Championship, organised by the South Asian Football Federation, marked the first edition of the regional tournament and was held on neutral ground in Thailand. Seven countries participated in the competition, including the Maldives, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, with teams competing in a league format to accumulate points across their matches.
The Maldives’ victory marks the country’s first SAFF Futsal Championship title, concluding the tournament as a milestone moment in the development of futsal in the South Asian region and in Maldivian sports history.
