President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that land reclamation works at Hulhumalé Phase III have been completed, with Giraavaru Falhu set to be the next reclamation project to reach completion.

The President posted the update on his official X account on Sunday, after announcing it at a People’s National Congress (PNC) event the previous night.

Land reclamation works for Hulhumalé Phase III have concluded with the full reclamation of the planned 63 hectares. The project initially commenced in October 2023 but experienced several temporary stoppages. Works resumed on 10 November 2025 and progressed at an accelerated and consistent pace following the deployment of additional heavy machinery.

To expedite the project, the Government mobilised two large dredgers, each capable of handling up to 22,000 cubic metres of sand per cycle. One of the dredgers, a trailing suction hopper dredger operated by Boskalis, began reclamation operations at the site on 28 November 2025. The deployment of these vessels significantly increased the pace of reclamation.

Hulhumalé Phase III forms part of the Government’s plan to address long-term housing needs through land reclamation. The Administration is currently undertaking reclamation projects across the Malé region as well as in other atolls as part of efforts to permanently resolve housing constraints nationwide.
